This week marks the second and final week of COP15, the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. The conference has been termed by some as our last chance to save this planet and activities will come to a head this week when key world leaders attend.
The European Commission is due to present an interactive map showing the location of all projects they support that were selected to highlight the EC’s efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The Orangutan Foundation is an integral partner of one of these projects “Conservation and sustainable management of lowland forests of south Central Kalimantan, Indonesia”, which focuses on the Lamandau River Wildlife Reserve, in Central Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. The Foundation was proud to note that the independent monitor for the EC thought in a recent assessment that our project was one of the best integrated conservation and development projects he had seen. He said that it was a good example of collaborative management of a protected area, striking a practical balance between local populations, local government, state forest protection services and conservation NGOs.
You can read more about this project at the Lamandau River Wildlife Reserve here. Alternatively the project can currently be found as one of the case studies on the following link : http://ec.europa.eu/europeaid/test/cs/index_en.htm.
The Lamandau River Wildlife Reserve is our current orangutan release site and further information about our work may be found on our website or on our blog.
