Orangutan Awareness Week was created to "spread the word" about the plight facing orangutans and their rainforest home. We believe that everyone should be able to play a part and make a difference and at no huge cost to the individual. We therefore created a one-day event where EVERYONE can take part - ORANGE FOR ORANGUTAN DAY©.
The concept is simple – everyone GOES ORANGE to raise awareness and generate funds for the conservation of orangutans. By "going orange" we mean wearing orange clothing, dying your hair orange, having an orange cake sale, holding an orange party - the opportunities are endless!
If we involve enough people then even with everyone paying just £1 to "go orange" we will be able to raise huge amounts of money to invest in conserving the orangutans and their rainforest home.
This year’s Orange for Orangutan day© was on Thursday 12th November. To celebrate the day everyone in the office donned orange and invited supporters to come to a pub quiz. The evening went really well; everyone had fun and we did well on the fundraising side. Many of our members and supporters organized their own orange events, and the feedback and funds are flooding in. Orange for Orangutan day© even got a mention on Countdown on Channel 4. You can watch the episode here.
This year we are aiming to raise £15,000 for our Protect Me and My Tree Appeal for our Orangutan Release Programme in Borneo.
The Lamandau River Wildlife Reserve is a 760km2 area of protected peat swamp forest in Central Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. It is also an orangutan release site with more than 160 orangutans who have been given a chance of living wild once more.
The Orangutan Foundation operates an Orangutan Release Programme which incorporates a veterinary health care component. The establishment of a network of guard posts around the Reserve's border and our work with local village communities, to promote the conservation and sustainable management of these forests, are key to ensuring that the growing orangutan population remains healthy and viable.
Please help us to raise £15,000 - these orangutans deserve a life in the forest and the forests deserve to have orangutans in them.
