Pondok Ambung Tropical Forest Research Station Print

Pondok Ambung Tropical Forest Research Station lies within one of Southeast Asia’s largest protected areas of tropical peat swamp and heath forest, Tanjung Puting National Park.

Pondok Ambung Tropical Forest Research Station

Established in the late 1980s, for the study of the endemic proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) Pondok Ambung has since been rebuilt and refurbished by the Orangutan Foundation, with grant support from Rufford Maurice Laing Foundation.

The research station is positioned in a beautiful location on the Sekonyer Kanan, a black-water river. Around Pondok Ambung is an established trail network of mixed riverine, peat swamp and dry-land habitat. The research station is only four kilometers downstream from Camp Leakey where, in 1971, Dr Biruté Galdikas began her long-term study of orangutans.

Pondok Ambung provides excellent facilities for visiting researchers and The University of Reading holds its annual tropical biology field course at the station. The facilities are also used by the National Park officials and by students from the local schools of Pangkalan Bun.

Pondok Ambung has hosted numerous studies of the Tanjung Puting’s fauna and flora and some are of these are listed below:

  • Proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) - Bogor Agriculture Institute
  • Snake inventory - Bogor Agriculture Institute
  • Orangutan research - Bogor Agriculture Institute
  • False Gharial (Tomistoma Schlegeii), a critically endangered species of crocodile - University of Bonn
  • Study into the effects of forest disturbance on the frequency and distribution of orangutans around Pondok Ambung - University of Aberdeen.
  • Long-tailed Macaques - (Dr Michael D. Gumert, Singapore)
  • Tropical Pitcher Plants (Nepenthes ampullaria and Nepenthes reinwardtiana) - Pondok Ambung Field Manager, Mr Devis Rachmawan.

The research station has comfortable facilities for twelve researchers and we would welcome individuals or group applications. Click here to download the brochure (695K).
