Getting the shot

“Working in the jungles of Borneo can be challenging—especially for someone from the northeast of England! We spent a week at Camp Leakey, getting to know the area and its orangutans, while collaborating closely with the dedicated team from the Orangutan Foundation. Our mission: to document the extraordinary wildlife of Tanjung Puting National Park.

As with much of my photography, patience is key. I often stay in one spot, envisioning an image and hoping it will unfold. While waiting for an orangutan to cross between two trees, a mother approached with her baby clinging tightly to her back. I quickly dropped to her (baby’s) eye level, capturing five distinct images as the mother moved swiftly past. Each frame revealed something different—a connection so relatable from a human perspective.

This particular shot was featured in Wildlife Photographer of the Year and exhibited at the Natural History Museum in London and the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.
